Summer newsletter
Happy New Year to all our customers. We hope 2011 is a positive year for all.
olive Fruit set
Fruit set in the olive grove has begun and tiny olives are appearing all over our trees. There is still much pruning to be done and yes it will result in fruit loss. Pruning normally starts after harvest in the spring, but we like to leave it until summer after the fruit has set. This way we maximise oil quality by sacrificing some fruit without it compromising on the olive quantity or production.
summer fruit
The nets we laid on the ground to collect our 2010 olive harvest are serving us well this summer. We have them slung over the fruit trees to protect the ripening fruit from birds. We weren't quick enough to save our cherries though. These vultures ate every cherry on our tree. They left us with just seeds dangling on stalks still attached to the tree. After that episode, it was out with the harvest nets to protect our peaches, nectarines and apples from going the same way as the cherries.
We did manage to save our strawberries from the birds and have been enjoying these lusiously ripe fruit daily. Our citrus trees are loaded with lemons and limes, mandarine, oranges and the grapefruit have fruit set..
Around the garden
Our vege garden has flourished this year. We have been eating home grown peas, lettuce, radish, zucchini, tomatoes, basil and coriander. Even our chooks have been enjoying green feeds of silverbeet, and lettuce. In return, they are laying us some large double yoke eggs. Our aubergines, bell peppers and chillis are almost ready to pick and Karen has been making beetroot pickle from the first harvest.
Antipasta platters
We will be serving antipasta platters with a medley of oils at the start of the new season for a small charge. You will be able to sit outside under the shade of our olive trees with your platter and medley of oils and let your tastebuds experience a food fusion..
